Why I am going into Business

The business arena is a rough and tumble world.  The battle for resources and business is a constant struggle, with competition being the main driver forward.   So why would anyone want to join the ranks of the business world and not just work at a cush government job?

The reasons I want to go into business are its dynamic nature, its opportunities, and its positive societal impact.

The dynamic nature of business stems from its fundamental uncertain and ever changing landscape.  It is this uncertain nature that pumps my adrenaline.  Business is not for the weak willed.  Failure is the rule, and not the exception.  Most small businesses fail (especially those in the restaurant business) before they have reached five years of existence.  Even large businesses can change dramatically, as they can be outsmarted, out-innovated, and out-competed by rivals large and small alike.  This creates a situation that is not boring with a lot of nervousness and excitement.  I can live on this in the business world.

The opportunities in the business world are practically endless.  These opportunities are to be your own boss, create a company in your image, and to make a lot of money.  Entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and Howard Schultz are examples of people who built their companies from nothing, created companies that reflect their values, and made a ton of money.  I strive to be like them.

The societal impact of business is its least understood aspect.  Businesses create the goods and services that people want, which allows for people to be physically and sometimes emotionally satisfied.  This satisfaction is what drives the true businessman to create new products and enterprises.  What businessmen and women really want to do, like all of society, is to spread wealth and happiness.  Those that stray from this principle and conduct business just to get rich sour business people’s image.  I love spreading wealth and happiness.

 

 

The Hiking Trail

One of the best and most convenient hiking trails in Los Angeles is Fryman Canyon.  The three mile trail is located off of Laurel Canyon on the Northern side of the Santa Monica mountains just south of Ventura Boulevard.  The U shaped trail features a climb on both legs of the U with a plateau top at the summit.  The opening of the U faces east, which means that one has to approach the summit from the west and climb eastward.

If one starts off at the Northern end of the U, one is immediately met with a curved and moderately sloped climb.  After about a half a mile, the slope is still curved but eases a bit (this is a great feature of the trail because it allows for the hiker to catch his or her breath). After about 1.2 miles one reaches the first summit.  It is a relatively jagged summit with no special markings.  The second summit at around 1.6 miles (where one can find water, access to benches, and another trail)  is flat.  This is a great place to relax before the descent.

The descent is pretty steep for around another mile.  The trail then proceeds in its descent  through a quiet and upscale residential neighborhood with beautiful houses and gardens.  One can then come full circle back to the start of the trail through this neighborhood of Studio City.

The trail is great for people and dogs.  There are specific water fountains for dogs at the second summit and there are plenty of trash cans for their waste.

There is a small parking fee if one wants to use the parking lot.  Free Parking can be found on Laurel Canyon Blvd.

So if you want to get in shape and experience a little nature that is close to home, come to Fryman Canyon.

The Flower Shop

Hi, my name is David Granovitz and this is my first blog post!

Manly men can like flowers.

I work at a flower shop called Boulevard Florist Wholesale Market in Lawndale,CA and I like flowers.  So you get the picture?

It took me about a year to appreciate their beauty.  At first I thought, why would anyone buy flowers?  They go bad in a week and you can’t really eat them.  But eventually the aesthetic beauty of flowers and plants overwhelmed me, and I realized what natural beauty does to people.  If you are sick, they can cheer you up.  If there is a special occasion such as a wedding, it can transform the whole atmosphere.  This is because flower designs, forms of art, exemplify the emotions.

I personally do everything in the flower shop from cashier, driver, bookkeeper, sales representative, and receiver.  This gives me the opportunity to have a diversified experience in the business.   The great thing about working at a flower shop and working with indoor plants and flowers is that most of the time people are happy to deal with you.  The only exception is when people have funerals for loved ones.  This is the saddest part of the flower business.  The happiest part of the business is when you make a spectacular event happen.  You can really see the fruit of your labor.
